The Silent Night Memorial Chapel stands on the site of the former St. Nikolaus Church (St. Nikola), where the Christmas carol was first sung on December 24, 1818. The modest, intentionally simple chapel is visited every year by guests from around the world. It is its simplicity that makes it appear so charming. After nine years of construction, it was inaugurated in 1937. It was financed solely through donations and is located at the site where the St. Nikolaus Church once stood. The two windows depict the songwriters Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber. The altar picture consists of a wooden relief by Hermann Hutter, dating from 1915. We ask for your understanding that the chapel is not accessible during guided tours (each about 20 minutes). The chapel is open daily throughout the year from 08:00 to 20:00.
