Griffen, Carinthia
Griffen Abbey: History Griffen Abbey (Grebinjski klošter) – the former Premonstratensian canonry "Sankt Maria im Griffental" – is located approximately two and a half kilometers northwest of the center of Griffen, at the foot of the southeastern foothills of the Saualpe, where the Grafenbach flows through the Grafenbachschlucht into the former Griffental, the plain of Altenmarkt (Stara Vas), and into Lake Griffen. The district was formerly called "Oberndorf" – as it is still mentioned in the Franciscan Cadastre of 1827; later, the district, which is now part of the market town of Griffen, was renamed "Stift Griffen".
