The St. Margarethen Quarry is one of the largest and oldest quarries in Europe. The valuable St. Margarethen limestone was already used in antiquity. It is still quarried today and was used, among other things, in the restoration of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and in the construction of many buildings on Vienna's Ringstrasse. This giant of prehistory has yielded numerous important fossils (some 25 million years old) in the 20th century. Since 2001, the St. Margarethen Quarry, together with the Fertö-Neusiedler See region, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The guided tour makes the millions of years old history of the quarry come alive in an exciting way!Group bookings are possible at any time between April and October upon request, and fixed tours of the quarry are also offered on certain dates during this period.A tour lasts 60 minutes.
