Stadttheater Steyr

Steyr, Upper Austria

theater

Industry Hall (Stadttheater) For years, there was consideration of a project for an industrial hall that would impressively showcase the importance of work in Steyr. On May 28, 1898, the stately building was opened as the "Kaiser Franz Joseph Industrial and Trade Exhibition Hall." In 1924, the hall was converted into a public cinema and concert hall with 900 seats, opening on April 13, 1924. The hall and vestibule were renovated by municipal council resolution on April 27, 1951, over a three-month period according to plans by architect Piffl, and handed over on September 7, 1951. In 1955, a Cinemascope screen was installed. After the old Stadttheater in Berggasse had become outdated and inaccessible, a modern stage house was built in 1957/1958 adjacent to the hall of the industrial hall, following the demolition of the old stage structure. The house, designed by architect Karl Tobisch-Labotyn and constructed using the Schüttbauverfahren (a building method), contained the most modern stage technology in Upper Austria at the time of its construction. The revolving stage has a diameter of over 11 meters. The new Stadttheater was inaugurated on September 27, 1958, with Puccini's "La Bohème," performed by the Linz Landestheater.
