The Church of Mariä Himmelfahrt, the CITY PARISH CHURCH of Gmünd, reflects the history of the city since the 14th century. During the city's heyday (13th/14th century), the church was built as a Gothic hall church with a central nave and two narrower side aisles. The church was consecrated in 1339. In the same era, the church was expanded with a chapel: the Rosenhaimer Chapel from 1549, which commemorates the founding family of Rosenhaimer. On the western outer wall of the chapel, a wall painting from the 18th century can be seen, depicting a cross with a kneeling founder and a view of Gmünd, below which is the fresco: Christ in Limbo. During the city's second heyday, the church was furnished in Baroque style and expanded with the sacristy and the Raitenau Chapel (today the mortuary).
