The age of the church can only be guessed at, due to lack of information, based on the patronage of St. Ulrich. The veneration of the Bishop of Augsburg can be documented as early as the 13th century. St. Ulrich was also considered the patron of horses, and initially many farmers came with their horses on July 4th for the blessing of the animals. The existing church building mainly dates back to the late 15th century. The vault under the west gallery bears the year 1473, and the somewhat younger choir was consecrated in 1500 by the Archbishop of Keutschach. The church is a solid structure made of unplastered Nagelfluh (conglomerate) blocks with a steep gabled roof over a equally high nave and choir. The protruding unadorned west tower originally had a Gothic pointed spire. The current "Welsche Haube" (a type of domed roof) dates from 1793.
