Spitalkirche

When visiting Bad Aussee, the Spitalkirche with its famous Gnadenstuhlaltar should be seen. The main altar of the Spitalkirche in Bad Aussee should not be referred to as a Trinity altar, but as an All Saints' altar. When open (Sunday side), it shows the Gnadenstuhl (Throne of Grace) surrounded by apostles, John the Baptist, and angels, as well as the heavenly choirs. This type of depiction is likely a very early, if not the first, such composition of an All Saints' image. The creation of the altarpiece is epigraphically attested to 1449, documented in a foundation charter from April 24, 1450, and goes back to a donation by Frederick III.
