At 484 m, the Sonnenberg is the highest mountain in the Leithagebirge, a ridge on the state border between Lower Austria and Burgenland. At the summit of the Sonnenberg is the Sonnenbergwarte, a border watchtower built during the Cold War and transferred here after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Today, this 15-meter-high metal tower can be climbed as an observation tower and offers a panoramic view, reaching as far as the Wechsel on clear days. A hike to the summit of the Sonnenberg can be started from Eisenstadt, leading via the Gloriette to the summit in about one and a half hours. Alternatively, an ascent is also possible from Hornstein via the old forest road in less than an hour.
