Sensenmuseum Geyerhammer

Scharnstein im Almtal, Upper Austria

ausstellungmuseumstour

Visit this unique industrial monument, nestled in the idyllic landscape by the Alm river! The signposted Scythe Trail, approximately 2.4 km long, leads you through what was once the largest scythe factory in the Danube Monarchy. In this "open-air museum," you will find an ensemble of production facilities, residential houses, and the manor houses of the "Black Counts." Another highlight of your excursion could be a hike (approx. one hour walking time) to the nearby Scharnstein castle ruins, where you can be accompanied by competent nature guides upon request. Scythe Forging at the Scythe Museum Three heavy tail hammers, powered by water wheels, with their forges for heating the steel and a variety of tools, illustrate for visitors the era of scythe production, which dates back four centuries in Scharnstein. For forging demonstrations, a pneumatic hammer and a water-powered tail hammer are available, where skilled scythe smiths can demonstrate, upon request, the "forging of a 'Bröckl' into a 'Zain'" or the "widening of a scythe blade." The museum, in an exhibition carefully integrated into the old hammer mill, showcases the eventful history of scythe production, specifically in Scharnstein in the Almtal. Furthermore, the production steps from the 'Bröckl' to the finished scythe, the lives of the smiths, their hard work and social environment, and the transition from artisanal production to industry are impressively illustrated.
