Gaflenz, Upper Austria
St. Sebald on the Heiligenstein has been a popular pilgrimage destination since the 15th century. More than 600 years ago, on August 29, 1413, a chapel was consecrated in honor of all saints, but especially St. Sebald. The remarkable thing about it: Sebald was officially canonized only 12 years later, and he is not venerated anywhere else in Austria. The miracles that Sebald performed in the area around Nuremberg were transferred to the Heiligenstein in popular legend. His appeal to the population was enormous, especially in the Baroque period. He is still considered an intercessor in illness and misfortune, a patron saint of livestock, and even a matchmaker. The mountain church on the 782 m high hill between Gaflenz and Weyer is the only Sebalduskirche in Austria. It is not only an art-historical jewel; to this day, pilgrims come from near and far. The highlight each year is the Sebaldifest. In the jubilee year 2013, the "Heiligenstein Theme Trail" was opened: At several stations in and around the church, visitors receive the most important information about the history of the mountain sanctuary, its significance as a pilgrimage site, and the work of St. Sebald. Since 2020, the Heiligenstein has been the highlight of the Sebaldus Pilgrimage Trail through the National Park Region. All information about the Sebaldusweg can be obtained fromTourismusverband Steyr und die Nationalpark Region | Infobüro ReichramingEisenstraße 75, 4462 ReichramingTel +43 7252 53229 DW 40Mail: reichraming@steyr-nationalpark.atWeb: www.sebaldusweg.atPublic transport:The Ennstalbahn runs between Linz and Weißenbach-St. Gallen.
