Schwanthaler Krippe

This extraordinary, seven-part nativity scene was created by JohannGeorg Schwanthaler (1740-1810), great-grandson of the great master Thomas Schwanthaler. Many details later served as models for later carvers' own works and are still part of every Salzkammergut nativity scene today, such as the "Lampotraga" (*), the group "Vada, lass mi a mitgehn" (*) and the Gloria Angel. They reflect the formerly poor, daily life in the sacred event. The Schwanthaler Nativity Scene shows seven scenes from the childhood of Jesus with the highest artistic skill and an inimitable color scheme. The painted background (around 1770) "der Prospekt", as can be admired in the Schwanthaler Nativity Scene, has also been considered typical for the Salzkammergut nativity scenes ever since, just like the juxtaposition of "Heavenly Jerusalem" and the Alpine landscape with its inhabitants. Admission is free, a voluntary donation for the preservation of the nativity scene is requested.
