North of Matrei in Osttirol, directly on the Felbertauernstraße, Weißenstein Castle thrones on a limestone rock that slopes steeply on two sides. The original castle dominates the Matrei valley basin and once guarded the road over the Tauern Pass. It is about 900 years old and received its current name in the 14th century. It cannot be visited - as it is privately owned, but a walk through the castle park is always worthwhile. Originally, there was a medieval castle here, which has been called Weißenstein since the 14th century. The actual castle area long consisted of three towers, the palace with a hall on the third floor, a kitchen wing, curtain walls, a chapel, and two inwardly open rondels. However, this complex was later expanded.
