Mattsee, Salzburg
Schloss Mattsee was built around 1100 by bishops from Passau in a landscape shaped by the last Ice Age. In 1398, the castle and the lordship were sold to the Archbishopric of Salzburg. In 1597, a plague ravaged the city of Salzburg, prompting Archbishop Wolf-Dietrich to retreat to Schloss Mattsee. In recent times, the castle changed owners several times until it was acquired by the municipality of Mattsee in 1949. Extensive renovations based on original plans began in 1996. The castle is an ideal starting point for discovery hikes along Lake Mattsee. The Millennium Path around the Schlossberg provides information with many display panels about the local natural and cultural history. The Stift Mattsee and the Stiftmuseum are also worth a visit. Use the parking facilities at Parkplatz Nord (free), Strandbad, or in the Weyerbucht (fee during the summer season). The location on the peninsula of Schlossberg remains attractive today as an event venue with magnificent halls for various occasions. Available are: Tassilo Saal with Gurtengewölbe, Diabelli Saal, Wolf-Dietrich Saal, and the castle courtyard with a splendid view of the lake. The beautiful ambiance is especially popular with wedding couples. Civil wedding ceremonies are also possible in Tassilo Saal. Say your "I do" in the special setting of this vaulted hall. Schloss Mattsee with winter garden and terrace is a popular meeting point for breakfast lovers. Roman Blaschke and Frank Reichle warmly welcome you! Schloss Mattsee is a highly idyllic and popular event and wedding location. The castle also houses the Leonardo Kunstakademie in the attic, which has been appreciated for years. Courses in various painting techniques, sculptural work in clay and plaster, and arts and crafts are offered year-round. Free trial days in autumn, children's seminars, and the proven art course "Bildnerische Gestaltung – Malerei und Grafik" are also part of the program. Exhibitions by the Kunstakademie and local artists can be visited repeatedly at Schloss Mattsee.
