Photo: Schloss KremseggKremsmünster, Upper Austria
Lords from the forgotten Rot family built the castle in the Middle Ages as a noble estate on a hill to the right of the Krems. An early mention dates back to 1235. In the 16th century, it was the seat of the Protestant-minded noble family Grünthaler. In the course of the Counter-Reformation, they had to leave the country. Anton Wolfradt, one of the most important abbots of Kremsmünster Abbey, bought the castle in 1627, which is documented by a Latin inscription above the main portal. Like the abbey, the castle received a long wall around the area in 1726 under Abbot Alexander Strasser. Jakob Prandtauer also worked on plans for Kremsegg. Since the 19th century, the castle gradually lost its importance. Finally, owners changed rapidly. The work of Countess Therese Kinsky and the industrialist Werner Lutzky remains in memory.
