Based on its location and construction, it is presumed that it originally served as a castle or manor house. Apart from a few documentary mentions from the 12th century, almost nothing is known about the fate of the house until the 16th century. At that time - in the 16th century - the house was already a "legitimate tavern" under the "landlordship of the Lords of Eggenberg", with a "sole and ancient innkeeping right". There are many traditions according to which the house was a robber baron castle for centuries with an underground passage to the "Kumpfmühle".
