Schloss Ebenzweier

Schloss Ebenzweier

Altmünster, Upper Austria

burgführung

On May 9, 2016, the castle was severely damaged by a roof fire. The renovation will take some time. It was already a manorial seat in the 13th century. Its current appearance is due to a renovation in 1842 by the then lord of the manor Archduke Maximilian Habsburg d'Este, a grandson of Maria Theresia (burial site in the cemetery). Through inheritance, the castle passed to a Bourbon line. In 1971, Prince Carlos Hugues de Bourbon gifted the castle to the municipality of Altmünster. Current owner: The Province of Upper Austria, which established a vocational school for hospitality here (1986). Worth seeing is the castle park with its botanical unique specimens and the rose garden. The mighty castle has two courtyards and is a product of generous alterations and extensions. The front courtyard is surrounded by three wings of the castle, is additionally enclosed by a wide wall, and is one of the castle's treasures. In its center stands a stone, octagonal fountain trough with engraved coats of arms and a stone central column. The facade of the right wing is not decorative, whereas the left is more enlivened by buttresses. The two upper floors of the central section feature glazed arcades. In the middle is a slender clock tower with a cornice gable. Impressive is the rear facade facing the lake, which has 75 windows. It also has a columned portico with an architrave and pointed gable, modeled after classical Greek examples. The park, which extends to the Traunseebundesstraße, is also harmonized with the imposing facade of this castle.
