Ambras Castle is one of Innsbruck's most significant attractions. Its cultural and historical importance is inextricably linked with Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-1595), who, as a true Renaissance prince, promoted the arts and sciences. He founded the magnificent Ambras Collections, for which he had a museum complex built in the Lower Castle, designed according to the most modern criteria. The current exhibition attempts to reconstruct the Archduke's Chamber of Art and Curiosities, his Armory of Heroes and other armories, as well as his Antiquarium. In Ferdinand's time, the living quarters were located in the Upper Castle. Today, the Habsburg Portrait Gallery is displayed there across three floors, featuring portraits from Albrecht III (1349-1395) to Emperor Franz I (1768-1835). More than 200 portraits are exhibited, among them invaluable works by renowned artists such as Lucas Cranach, Anton Mor, Titian, van Dyck, and Diego Velázquez. The collection of late medieval sculptures is housed on the ground floor of the Upper Castle, with Emperor Maximilian I's St. George's Altar as its showpiece. Also admire one of the most extensive glass collections in the world. The Strasser Glass Collection includes precious Renaissance and Baroque creations from Venice, Bohemia, Silesia, and Tyrol.
