Schiffleutmuseum

Stadl-Paura, Upper Austria

ausstellungmuseumstour

In 1979, the Stadl-Paura boatmen's association converted the birthplace of Abbot Maximilian Pagl (*1668), builder of the Trinity Church, into the Schiffleutmuseum (Boatmen's Museum). After the exhibition was relocated to the Salzstadln (salt granaries), which were newly built on their historic site after 100 years for the Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition 2016, the museum reopened in 2018 after renovation and complete overhaul. Inside, you can find a lot about the salt transshipment point Stadl-Paura, with a focus on salt shipping, shipbuilding, counter-tows, and rafting on and along the Traun, but also fundamental information about salt extraction in the Salzkammergut. Of course, you also learn all sorts of things about the boatmen's guild and the meager life of the boatmen – and what the parade oars are all about.
