Schichtturm

The Schichtturm shapes the image of the mountain town from afar and is one of the most famous landmarks of Eisenerz. Originally planned in 1581 by the Eisenerz Radmeister (mine owners) as a simple guardhouse, the tower with its bell was intended to call the miners to work – to their "Schicht" (shift). In fact, a stately building in Renaissance style was created. From 1585, tower guards kept watch day and night in the tower room to warn the population of fires and flood danger in the valley. The exhibition vividly conveys the tasks the Schichtturm once fulfilled. Cannon shots, flags by day, lanterns by night, and different bell signals played an important role. The current tower guard, Hermann Buder, also shares interesting facts about earlier underground mining and today's open-pit mining. Using a model, he also explains how a Radwerk (water-powered ore mill) functioned. From Eisenerz's old town, visitors can reach the Schichtturm via short switchbacks or along a Stations of the Cross.
