Schanzgraben

The redoubt and entrenchment at Jungfraunstein, which were built in 1702 by Bavarian sappers on the orders of Elector Max Emanuel of Bavaria, represent a type of fortification characteristic of early modern warfare and are among the few defensive structures from the War of the Spanish Succession that were not subsequently razed. The earthwork thus represents one of the few terrain monuments that documents the fate of a border region formerly contested by Bavaria and Austria.
