During the flowering period around Easter, thousands of snake's head fritillary (Schachblume) heads transform the meadows into a dark red sea of blossoms. This coloring of the meadows lasts only one to two weeks. Afterwards, the plant disappears into the green of the newly sprouted meadow grasses. None of the hanging bell-shaped flowers resemble each other. Each individual flower, which shows various color variations from deep violet to light brown-pink, features a distinctive checkered pattern that gave the protected plant its name.
