Ruine Fragenstein

The remains of Fragenstein Castle are located in the northwest of Zirl on a steep rock. From its beginnings, Fragenstein was a princely castle that served both as a defensive structure and as a prison. The Fragenstein family was mentioned in documents in 1227, 1239, and 1254. In the 15th century, Fragenstein flourished under Emperor Maximilian, who often stayed in Zirl for hunting. In June 1703, the castle was blown up by the beleaguered Zirl riflemen during the so-called "Bavarian Tumult".
