Oggau am Neusiedler See, Burgenland

In earlier centuries, besides wars and local misfortunes (fires), epidemics above all caused great losses among the population. For example, the plague epidemic from August 5 to December 12, 1713, claimed 95 victims in Oggau, more than 10% of the inhabitants at that time. Due to a public vow, the community erected the chapel in honor of Saint Rosalia, the patron saint against the plague, on a hill outside the village in 1715. At the same time, the people of Oggau vowed to preserve this building for all time. A year later, the community declared Rosalia Day (September 4) a community holiday, which is still celebrated today with a procession to the chapel and a solemn church service. This vow of the ancestors is still fulfilled today.
