Präzisions-Sonnenuhr

Grein, Upper Austria

The special feature of the sundial is the analemma, a curved reading line that automatically accounts for the seasonal deviations of solar time. This allows both the time and the date to be read. For its construction, particularly precise components were required. The 4.17-meter-high stainless steel ring had to be manufactured with an accuracy of about one millimeter and then precisely aligned. After assembly, the clock was extensively tested and calibrated. During this process, the time could initially be read with an accuracy of about ten seconds, and at the opening, even to five seconds. This makes the sundial considered to be exceptionally accurate. The sundial is now publicly accessible at the Römerrastplatz in Greiner Hafen and, due to its location on the Danube Cycle Path, is a new top attraction for visitors.
