Pfarrkirche Werfen

The current parish church of St. James the Greater was built between 1652 and 1657, based on a plan by the Salzburg court master builder Johann Baptist Driesche. The tower received its present appearance in 1775/76, when it was topped with an additional upper floor and given a baroque onion dome. The comprehensive renovation carried out from 1991 to 2002 initially involved structural repairs and, completed in 1998, an interior renovation, during which the wallpaper-like ornamental wall paintings were restored using original findings and old photographs. The tower dome was also re-clad with larch shingles.
