Pfarrkirche Wenigzell

The parish church of Wenigzell is a popular pilgrimage site for pilgrims passing through to Mariazell. It is consecrated to St. Margaret, and St. Margaret's Day (July 20) is celebrated every year with a musicians' Kirtag (fair). In a document in Vorau Abbey, the village "Zell" with the chapel of St. Margaret was first mentioned in 1209. In the second half of the 17th century, Wenigzell was a popular pilgrimage site for farmers who prayed to Saint Patrick for good fortune in the stable. Subsequently, the enlargement of the church began, which was consecrated in 1735. It was a magnificent Rococo church, but on April 19, 1945, it fell victim to flames during the turmoil of war. Reconstruction and interior design in the Neo-Baroque style slowly began. The only artistically modern piece is a baptismal font made of serpentinite, with the basin in the shape of an octahedron, designed by the Graz artist Wolfgang Rahs.
