Pfarrkirche St. Martin

Pfarrkirche St. Martin

Aldrans, Tyrol

A church with a turbulent history. A small church probably stood on the rock of Aldrans in early times. It was consecrated as the Gothic Martinuskirche on August 10, 1482, and expanded and baroque-ized in the 17th century. In 1891, a restoration in the Nazarene style took place. On the night of October 6-7, 1893, the interior and the roof with the precious ceiling painting were destroyed by a fire. The fire was so intense that even the bells melted and the tower developed cracks. The church was rebuilt according to the taste of the time and re-consecrated in 1894. A renewed restoration took place in 1929 with a new ceiling painting by Raphael Thaler. In 1966/67, a thorough restoration followed under Arch.DI Loch; the old sacristy, the second sacristy, and the Lourdes chapel were removed, the roof was extended, and the new sacristy and mortuary chapel were built. The restoration concluded with the consecration of the altar and the elevation of the pastoral care to a parish on St. Martin's Day in 1967.
