Pfarrkirche St. Daniel

The parish church of St. Daniel is consecrated to "Saint Daniel", and the village, which belongs to the municipality of Dellach/Gail, is also named after him. Coming from the west and reaching the municipal border at Höfling, the view immediately falls on the onion dome, which, it seems, reaches far into the sky. Coming from the east, one can see the church's spire shining into the land from afar. The parish church of St. Daniel dates back to the 9th century; in any case, around 1100 it was the original or mother parish for the Upper Gail and Lesach Valleys, which at that time belonged to the Patriarchate of Aquileia. The 30m long and 10m wide church is a simple building from the last quarter of the 15th century. The walls of the nave preserve remains of the Romanesque church. The somewhat narrower and lower choir was certainly built after the destruction of the old church by the Turks in 1478. The pointed-arch west gate is profiled and, as is customary in the Gailtal, rectangularly framed. The Gothic iron fittings of the oak door are remarkable. Particularly worth seeing is the colorful decoration on the pillars and on the net-ribbed vault, which gives the house of worship a cheerful radiance. It was extensively renovated in the years 2002-2004. In the course of this, ground excavations were also carried out inside the church, which are described in a commemorative publication (2004).
