Pfarrkirche Matrei

The mighty parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption, located on the eastern bank of the Sill in the municipality of Pfon, is steeped in history. Despite extensive Baroque alterations, it still features Romanesque and, especially, Gothic architectural elements. The ceiling paintings, which depict Karl VI, the father of Maria Theresia, are colorful. On the high altar stands the revered miraculous image "Our Lord in Misery," a 2 m tall Ecce Homo figure. Also noteworthy is the 3 m high holy water font made of stainless steel and bronze, which was erected in 1996 by the artist Anton Amort.
