Pfarrkirche Großwilfersdorf

The baroque parish church of Großwilfersdorf was built in two stages between 1674 and 1682 and is consecrated to St. Patrick. The patron saint's day is celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent with great public participation. The Holy Trinity is celebrated as the second patron. In 1754, it was elevated to a parish. Origin of the Church The parish church originated solely from the initiative of the farmers, who decided in 1674 to build their own village church for the veneration of the Holy Trinity. The farmers raised the necessary capital and also actively participated in the construction work. Among other things, they even fired the wall and roof tiles themselves, which met with the disapproval of Count Wildenstein, who operated a brickworks in Kalsdorf. Fearing loss of profits, he summarily destroyed the farmers' kiln. Nevertheless, work on the church building progressed; The choir, built in 1674, consists of a square bay with an eight-part ribbed vault on pilasters and a 3/8-closure. According to the building inscription, the nave was built between 1682 and 1683 and features three transverse-rectangular bays with cross-ribbed vaults and arches with recessed field divisions on pilasters. In 1702, a square tower with an open tower hall and a broken pyramid helmet was added to the east. In 1703 – thanks to the donation of a Viennese citizen – the old wooden bell tower, which warned the community of dangers, could be replaced by a brick church tower. The building was extended in the east-west direction in the 18th century and completely renovated in 1976/77.
