Pfarrkirche Axams zum Hl. Johannes

The baroque parish church is one of the most beautiful rural churches in Tyrol and was built under Pastor Burglechner from 1732 - 1734. A Romanesque church, first mentioned in 956, stood on the site of today's baroque church very early on. In 1498, the first church was replaced by a late Gothic building, from which the striking 74 m high tower originates. There are 2 sundials on the outer wall. Inside the church are five valuable altars, as well as rich, late baroque stucco work by Anton Gigl (Wessobrunn). Also particularly noteworthy is the nativity scene from 1800, which is set up annually at Christmas time, was designed by Axams artists, and features magnificently dressed figures up to 120 cm tall.
