Griffen, Carinthia
Nobel Prize winner in Literature Peter Handke is from Southern Carinthia, born in Griffen. Griffen Abbey not only houses a large exhibition on the life and work of the writer Peter Handke, who was born in Altenmarkt/Griffen, but is also a significant exhibit itself. Since his first novel "Die Hornissen" (1966), Handke has returned to the places of his origin, his childhood – to Griffen Abbey, to the Grafenbach with its gorge, to the fields and the village area of Altenmarkt, to the Saualm, Griffner See and, last but not least, to the town of Griffen with the Schlossberg, the castle ruins or the stalactite cave. As recurring settings in his literature, they form the extended grounds of the exhibition. The show aims to encourage visitors to rediscover Peter Handke's work against the backdrop of these places or, conversely, to explore these places anew with his literature.
