OÖ. Feuerwehrmuseum

The St. Florian Fire Brigade Museum is housed in the baroque Meierhof (manor farm) of the Augustinian Canons' Monastery. The building has the shape of a double quadrangle with enormous dimensions (84 x 71 meters). After its decay in the 1960s, the Meierhof was restored, and with the decision to establish a museum by the association "Historisches Feuerwehrzeughaus St. Florian" (Historic Fire Station St. Florian), the museum could be opened in 1984. Access to the exhibition is through a small hall, which is reserved for the St. Florian Monastery Fire Brigade. It has existed as the oldest Austrian company fire brigade since 1847. The museum presents the development of the fire brigade system both as a technical and as a social institution. Old fire brigade equipment such as hand-operated pumps, horse-drawn vehicles, motorized vintage vehicles, as well as personal equipment and uniforms show the historical development of fire brigade equipment. Furthermore, the current state of fire brigade technology, disaster response, fire prevention, and the fire brigade industry are also addressed. The history of the Upper Austrian Fire Brigade Association and the Upper Austrian State Fire Brigade School, which was founded as the first in the German-speaking world (1927), is also given space. There are separate exhibition areas for the fire brigades of the cities of Linz, Wels, and Steyr, which represent the work of the fire brigades and the individual firefighter for the benefit of society, standing in for the almost 1000 fire brigades in our federal state.
