In a remarkable "glass display case" amidst the impressive natural landscape of the Schladminger Tauern, a journey through time takes place into bygone eras, when the extraction of raw materials in the Schladminger Tauern was daily bread. Modernity and tradition meet at the end of the Obertal valley in the form of simple architecture and old weathered building fabric. Contemporary art clarifies past functions, the present is confronted with history. With the choice of building materials, two elements were also taken up that played an essential role in the creation and processing of the raw material nickel. The museum thus authentically conveys an impression of life at the time of the miners. The Nickelmuseum Hopfriesen is consequently a part of historical mining. Of outstanding cultural and mining historical significance, the former nickel smelter was transformed into a museum that is unique in Central Europe. Here it is shown what was made from the precious metal in the past and what nickel is used for today: often invisible, but nevertheless indispensable. From "tea boxes to leg prostheses" ranges the wide spectrum of objects that were and are made of nickel in the past and present. For our youngest visitors, a small mountain goblin named "Nicki" tells how the silvery shining metal came to be named after him. He points out those pieces throughout the exhibition where there is something special for children to discover. "Nicki" makes the exhibition lively for young visitors and encourages them to do their own research. >> Experience the museum online <<
