Selected exhibits, film and sound installations lead from Bronze Age mining around 1000 BC, through the town's history, to winter sports with Toni Sailer and the legendary "Kitzbühel Ski Wonder Team" of the 1950s. The focus of the museum's permanent exhibition is on Alfons Walde. On the third floor and attic, the work of the Kitzbühel painter is comprehensively presented with all its facets, featuring 60 paintings and over 100 graphics, drawings, photographs, and prints. Kitzbühel is so much more than "Kitz"! Although the town has become world-renowned as a hotspot for the rich and famous and as the venue for the spectacular Hahnenkamm Race, this is ultimately only a comparatively short section in the town's 750-year history. Kitzbühel was and is a lively, diverse, exciting, constantly changing place – and the exhibition aims to show as many of these facets as possible. It approaches the town of Kitzbühel with numerous historical and contemporary objects from museums and private collections, texts, films, and animations from three different perspectives: "The Birth of the Town" deals with the act of foundation and its consequences, which made Kitzbühel an administrative seat and the namesake center of the region with characteristic urban architecture. The question "How much Bavaria is in Kitzbühel?" secondly addresses the rather ambivalent relationship with Bavaria. This spans from common ancestry, through the political affiliation changing from Bavaria to Tyrol and the associated warlike conflicts, to the Bavarian guest of the recent past. Finally, "Kitzbühel, Place of Longing" addresses the aspect of Kitzbühel that can be summarized as "Kitz": the fashionable tourist resort that has been in demand for over 100 years and its more or less dazzling accompanying phenomena.
