Eisenerz, Styria
The craft of tanning has a long tradition in Eisenerz. The inscription "Anno 900 Ledererhaus" gives a hint about its origin, which is historically documented as 1548. The exhibition displays original, functional tanning machines from the 1930s, which make the production of leather transparent. A special role is played by the re-commissioned waterwheel, which was used for leather production then and for electricity generation today. "Das Gerberhaus" has borne the name of the last tanning dynasty since 1840. The Salzer tannery came into the possession of the municipality of Eisenerz in 1984 through a legacy. Through a donation, the property came into the possession of the newly founded "Verein Gerberei Salzer zur Revitalisierung des Objektes" under Herbert Krump in 2004. Over the past 16 years, the cultural monument has been saved and set up as a tannery museum through numerous volunteer hours. In 2015, the province of Styria awarded the Salzer tannery the title "Styrian Landmark".
