Mühlviertler Dom

Niederkappel, Upper Austria

The Gothic church from the years 1404-1411 had finally become too small in the 19th century. Thus, the call for a new church building grew louder and louder. The well-known and probably most important Linz bishop Rudigier suggested the establishment of a fund for the enlargement of the church, for which the village judge and local poet Ignaz Donabaur made the first donation in 1858. The reconstruction of the church took place in the years 1890-1895. The plans for the "Mühlviertler Dom" were drawn up by the then Linz cathedral master builder Raimund Jeblinger. The church was built at that time with great sacrifices from the parish population. The parish and church patron is St. Apostle Andrew. The church itself could be consecrated in 1895, but the tower was only completed in 1907, and the organ was acquired in 1912. During a group tour, you will learn about the building history of the Mühlviertler Dom and at the same time gain an exciting insight into a time of great religious and social upheaval, which also left its mark in a small village. Car: from Linz on the B127 to the Altenfelden roundabout, turn off towards Lembach im Mühlkreis, follow the road to Niederkappel. Bus: from Linz by public buses reachable in a good 1 hour.
