Name: Central Stone in the Bad Aussee Spa Park Description: The historic path to the center of Austria The fact that Bad Aussee can bear the name "Center of Austria" is not merely the recorded feeling of those for whom the spa town is a true heartland. This center was actually determined in 1949 in a competition by the "Große Österreich Illustrierte". The task was to determine the actual geographical center of Austria. After investigations using various methods, the town from the Ausseerland emerged as the actual heartland. The fact that Bad Aussee truly deserves its new title was officially confirmed by an expert opinion from the University of Vienna. The great joy was celebrated at a festival in the spa park in August 1949 with film star Maria Andergast. The spa park gets a special monument After 40 years of determining the "Center of Austria", whose brand is now legally protected, a stone monument was erected in the spa park. Created by sculptor Erich Laufer, the memorial stone made of local Fludergraben marble has adorned the spa park, surrounded by chestnut trees in the heart of Bad Aussee, ever since, and is a special excursion destination with an interesting historical background for many visitors. Around the center As befits a true center, there is plenty to discover around the stone monument. Strolling through the picturesque spa park, visitors can admire the impressive statue of Archduke Johann. The impressions can linger during a short rest on the benches under the trees of the spa park, while the gentle murmur of the confluence of the Altausseer- and Grundlseertraun can be heard in the background. If you follow the gentle murmur, you will reach the Mercedessternbrücke, which circularly connects the three riverbanks at the spa park for pedestrians. This was built in 2005 on the occasion of the Styrian Provincial Exhibition "Fools and Visionaries – with a pinch of salt", and also symbolizes the geographical center of Austria. Ideal for families and children, on the opposite bank is the Kurpark children's playground with some highlights such as a climbing wall, a hammock, and a slide. For relaxation and cooling, the adjacent Kneipp facility provides stimulating moments with Kneipp applications for feet, arms, and knees. Distributed up to the waterfall, visitors can enjoy moments of peace here, surrounded by the sounds of the water. Saturated with impressions and thoroughly refreshed, a personal souvenir of the visit to the geographical center of Austria now awaits on the third bank of the Mercedessternbrücke. In the Bad Aussee tourist office, the official Center Certificate can be issued, thus preserving memories of a unique day here in the heart of Austria for a long time.
