Mesnerhaus

In the heart of the Sölktal lies the historic Mesnerhaus of St. Nikolai. This special building, which in its almost 400-year existence served as a village school, poorhouse and orphanage, toll house, and most recently as the residence of the sacristans and a meeting place for the community, now faces a new purpose: it is to become a vibrant center for traditional knowledge, cultural exchange, and communal learning. With an interactive exhibition and a diverse event program, the association for the preservation of the old knowledge of the Sölktäler aims to make old knowledge tangible and at the same time create a place of togetherness for locals and guests. Deserving personalities of the valley in the fields of healing, music, and culinary arts will be honored. Their actions and work have shaped the village community, and their legacy is still palpable today. The rear Großsölktal (formerly the municipality of St. Nikolai im Sölktal) is unique due to its special topography. Before motorization, the valley was often inaccessible for weeks during the winter months due to the avalanche situation, and even in good conditions, it required several hours of walking to reach the next larger town. Due to the seasons, this seclusion on the one hand led to the inhabitants having to help themselves in all aspects of daily coexistence. On the other hand, the Großsölktal has been a trade route across the Alps during the snow-free period since the Iron Age, which enabled a constant transfer of knowledge from outside.
