Eisenerz, Styria
The Styrian mountain lake is a true natural jewel, in whose emerald green water surface the rock face of the Hochschwab massif is reflected. The lake is undeveloped, natural, and fed by the pure spring water of the surrounding mountains. It received its name due to its proximity to Leopoldstein Castle.By the way: According to a legend, a merman is said to have been captured in the vicinity of the lake. To be released, he showed his captors an iron ore deposit: the Erzberg, only a few kilometers away. The crystal-clear water and the pure mountain air invite extended walks around the lake and explorations by boat on the water. If you follow the 4 km long hiking trail around the lake, you also get a magnificent panoramic view, where the picturesque and untouched surroundings can be admired. Wonderful hours of sunshine on the lake can be enjoyed on board electric, pedal, and rowing boats. The boats are available for rent daily from 10:00 to 18:00 during the summer months. On hot summer days, visitors can cool off with a welcome swim in Leopoldsteiner See, outside the nature reserve. With a water temperature of a maximum of 20 °C, refreshment is guaranteed.Observing the crystal-clear water from a bird's-eye view works best from the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Klettersteig (via ferrata). The challenging via ferrata, with a difficulty of D, is well secured but requires good physical condition. Once at the top, climbers are rewarded with a unique view.Afterwards, a refreshment is needed: The Restaurant Leopoldsteinersee and the Seestüberl on the east bank welcome their guests for this. Regional delicacies such as Steirerkasnockn (Styrian cheese dumplings) are served, as well as proven classics. A special treat is the lake trout directly from Leopoldsteiner See. This specialty is served in the Seestüberl and makes the heart of fish lovers beat faster.Refreshing tip: Leopoldsteiner See offers perfect cooling on the Styrian Iron Trail hiking route!
