In the middle of the limestone and sandstone formations lie about 20 granite blocks of various sizes; the largest bears an inscription in honor of Leopold von Buch. The granite blocks are an allochthonous rock occurrence. Granite in the pre-Alpine region at the border between the Limestone Alps and the Flysch Zone is a geological peculiarity. The rock was brought here by the formation of the Alps and various sliding processes. It was initially assumed that the granite belonged to the Bohemian Mass, but various investigations showed that the granite blocks belonged to the Gresten Klippen Zone. The rock blocks are likely to have detached from the continental slope about 40-50 million years ago and slid into the Penninic Ocean. The age of the granite was determined to be 360 million years. Another peculiarity is not geological, but rather a botanical rarity. On these granite blocks, over 100 different mosses can be found, many of which are on the list of endangered species. These are therefore only found here and in small areas of the Central Alps. Public transport: The Ennstalbahn runs between Linz and Weißenbach-St. Gallen. Details at www.ooevv.at.
