Lehmden Privatmuseum

Deutschkreutz Castle is no ordinary museum – it is a total work of art, created by one of the most significant Austrian artists of the 20th century: Prof. Anton Lehmden (1929–2018), co-founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism and long-time professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1966, Lehmden acquired the then heavily dilapidated castle and dedicated himself to its restoration for decades – not merely as a builder, but as an artist. His signature can be felt in every room: paintings, stained-glass windows, murals, and artfully designed details merge with the architecture to create a place where art is not just exhibited, but lived. On approximately 800 m² of exhibition space, one encounters Lehmden's work in its full depth – intense, imaginative, and unique. The experience is complemented by the impressive chapel and references to other works, such as the Lehmdenkirche in Deutschkreutz, which he designed.
