An English ladies' carriage, a magnificent landau, a hearse, a Pustertal country wagon, a Hungarian hunting wagon or a baker's cart from Sillian – museum director Gernot Vinatzer knows the different carriage types and their uses precisely. “The heyday of nostalgic horse-drawn carriages began in the late 18th century. At that time, individual carriage types developed for the various areas of use,” says Vinatzer. A black hearse particularly catches the eye: “Such wagons were used at the Viennese court, with black hearses only accompanying the reigning monarch on his last journey. All other personalities of the court were transported in red carriages.” In addition to winter sleds and over 20 horse-drawn carriages from the period between 1880 and 1930, the Carriage and Local History Museum in the historic center of Obertilliach also houses a collection of farming equipment. They document the development and change of agriculture in the Lesachtal. Most of the exhibited carriages come from the greater Tyrol area. They are each explained with information texts in German and Italian.
