Graz, Styria
Like a giant drop, it fell into the city in 2003 when Graz was the European Capital of Culture. It became a modern landmark and shines with its biomorphic exterior as well as with the inner values of its exhibitions. "The Friendly Alien," as the Kunsthaus Graz is affectionately called, is connected to the historic "Eisernes Haus" (Iron House). The "Eisernes Haus," built in 1848, was one of the first cast-iron buildings in continental Europe – a department store with large, inviting display windows. Over the many years, it was extensively renovated, and during the construction of the Kunsthaus, it was restored to its original state.
