Kundler Klamm

Kundl, Tyrol

Our favorite spot: The wide riverbank at Gasthaus Kundler Klamm. Here you can wonderfully build stone cairns. A hike through the gorge delights families and amateur geologists alike. The surrounding rock massif of dolomite rock is 235 million years old and was formed during the alpine mountain building. Children and amateur geologists are happy about unusual stone finds on the banks of the Ache. According to legend, a dragon once lived here, which a farmer killed by a trick. In its death throes, the monster bit through the rock, creating the Kundler Klamm. Excursion tips: The riverbed is a site for various geological rock types. You can have these stones ground or processed into everyday objects in the village at Tyrol's only stone turning workshop. As a grand finale, a ride on the leisurely train through the Kundler Klamm awaits you. This operates several times a day in summer from Schlucht train station to Mühltal and back. Sturdy footwear and surefootedness are absolutely necessary. In bad weather, we recommend avoiding gorge hikes. On heavy rainy days and from November to April, the gorges are closed for safety reasons!! Attention cyclists - a strict cycling ban applies in the Kundler Klamm!!! Access by bicycle is only permitted from the Klammbrücke on the Kundl side to the Gasthaus Kundler Klamm.
