The Kulturhaus Ganghofermuseum is a lively meeting place. With regular concerts, readings, cabaret, lectures, etc., cultural enjoyment has found a colorfully furnished home here. There are exhibitions by renowned artists, living craftsmanship in the carving room, and a museum garden that is also full of life. Here, people marvel, learn, and relax. Old grain and herb varieties are cultivated, there is a bread oven, a bark hut, and much more. Inside, you will find a public library and a "storytelling museum," because every single exhibit comes from Leutasch and thus has its own unique, personal history. In the museum rooms, stories are told about the life of the local poet Ludwig Ganghofer, hunting and fishing, village history, and rural life in earlier times. WRITER LUDWIG GANGHOFER As probably the most famous Bavarian writer, Ludwig Ganghofer spent over 20 years the majority of his time in his hunting lodge "Hubertus" not far from the Tilfussalm in the picturesque Gaistal. There he found inspiration for his most famous works, above all, of course, "Das Schweigen im Walde." Many exhibits in the Ganghofermuseum are directly related to the Bavarian author and his hunting lodge. Particularly noteworthy, however, are the exhibited photographs. As a nature and hunting enthusiast, he was truly captivated by the mountains, dedicated himself with great passion to landscape photography, and then developed the elaborate pictures himself in the darkroom specially set up in the hunting lodge. His hunting seat in the Gaistal became a meeting point for many well-known personalities around 1900. His guests included Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Richard Strauss, the conductor Bruno Walter, the world-famous singer Leo Slezak; sometimes even the entire Vienna Burgtheater ensemble stayed with him, as did the painters Franz von Stuck, Fritz Kaulbach, Franz Defregger, Mathias Schmid, Hugo Engl, and Hermann Ebers. His circle of friends also included Johannes Brahms, Johann Strauß Sohn, Rainer Maria Rilke, Ricarda Huch, Gerhard Hauptmann, Thomas Mann, and even the Emperor (Wilhelm II.). The extensive collection of the Ganghofermuseum also includes the two books "Ludwig Ganghofer im Wettersteingebirge" and the "Hausbuch von Hubertus." Both provide detailed insights into the life and work of the Bavarian writer, nature lover, and bon vivant Ludwig Ganghofer. The woodcarver Hermann Klocker is also practically part of the inventory of the Ganghofermuseum. He enlivens the building with the wonderful scent of Swiss pine wood and pipe tobacco. A wheelchair-accessible toilet is located at the nearby cemetery.
