Steyr, Upper Austria

Highlights of Nativity Scene Art. Highlights of the exhibition in the Palmenhaus are the baroque Lamberg nativity figures and the so-called "Waggonkrippe" (wagon nativity scene) by Josef Seidl from Mühlviertel, which was specially made for the "Licht ins Dunkel" campaign. This "Rolling Nativity Scene", built into an ÖBB wagon, traveled as an advertising medium in Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy, and Germany during Advent in 1992 and 1997 for the ORF fundraising campaign "Licht ins Dunkel". Both nativity scenes are sure to delight young and old with their wealth of figures and details. The baroque nativity scene from Lamberg Castle, along with its precious collection of figures, comes from the family estate of Josef Graf Lamberg. It was handed over to the Steyr City Museum in 1914 by his wife Anna, the daughter of the arms manufacturer Josef Werndl. The valuable collection today comprises more than 200 clothed figure dolls, a large part of which came from various church nativity scenes. Easter Nativity Scenes For visitors of all ages, in addition to the wagon nativity scene and the Steyr nativity scene, Easter nativity scenes from Haslach can also be admired. The depictions are mechanically animated and show scenes from the life of Jesus as well as Stations of the Cross. During Advent and the period before Easter, hands-on stations await children and families in the exhibition. Group visits are possible year-round by prior arrangement.
