The Austrian Crime Museum, located in more than 20 exhibition rooms of Scharnstein Castle, documents the history of the Austrian justice and security system from the late Middle Ages to the present day.In the vaults of the castle, where the regional court was located from 1584 to 1848, numerous exhibits depict past court proceedings, as well as torture and imprisonment. The original torture chamber provides insight into the practice of historical justice.The past and present of the Gendarmerie, the documentation of spectacular criminal cases that were solved, as well as the uniforms, equipment, and gear of this traditional executive body await guests in the historic exhibition rooms.A further exhibition section, currently under construction, will present more modern equipment and policing, as well as famous cases from recent times.
