Kriegerdenkmal

Traunkirchen, Upper Austria

On the southern rock of the Johannesberg, based on an idea by architect Josef Stummer and executed by academic sculptor Sepp Moser from Neukirchen, is a magnificently designed, much-noticed war memorial. Construction of the war memorial began in 1958. From 1964 to 1966, Josef Moser, standing on a huge scaffold, carved the figural representations into the solid rock of the south face of the Johannesberg: Below the dedication is the sacrificing soul, the sacrificial fire blazing towards the sky. Closely related is: "We sacrificed ourselves for the peace of our homeland; but freedom, peace, also demand sacrifices from you!" The bereaved are represented by mother and child on the high rock to the left. "Honor our heroes, peace to all the world" is written in letters 30 cm high and 6 cm deep. The scales indicate that the sacrifice has been accepted. The third figure is the angel, who brings the fruit of the sacrifice, peace and blessing.
