Forchtenstein, Burgenland
Name: Way of the Cross to the "Three Crosses" Description: The historically interesting local mountain in Forchtenstein still poses riddles! Until the early Late Middle Ages, the area of Forchtenstein was forested. On its summit is a large defensive complex with an outer and inner work, and a rampart and ditch system. It is one of the largest complexes in Austria. For three hundred years, Stations of the Cross have led along its ramparts and ditches, starting at the pilgrimage church of Mariä Himmelfahrt and running through the village up to the summit of the local mountain, where they conclude with the "Three Crosses". On Palm Sunday, the Way of the Cross devotion leads up the local mountain with great participation, including from the surrounding communities. If you want to organize your thoughts or just enjoy the silence - then a hike up there is just the thing. You can also linger on a bench, let your soul dangle, and enjoy the magnificent castle view. The three crosses are freely accessible all year round and can be visited at any time!
